I’ve been traveling through the States for the past month, visiting with family and friends before my return to Paris and doing a whole lot of writing, yoga, hiking, running, being a lady who lunches, and just getting quiet. Note: The “getting quiet” part is the real practice right now.
During one of my visits I asked my beautiful friend about her house rules. Everybody has them, even if they’re not stated and I like to think I’m a good house guest so I asked. And she replied sweetly:
“We only have two house rules. One, is to enjoy. Two, is to don’t do what you don’t want to do.”
I stopped dead in my tracks. “RULE #2 IS EVERYTHING!” I thought.
Having known my friend and her husband for years, it absolutely made since. They do exactly what they want to do. They live exactly how they want to live. They do the things they enjoy, engage and share with the people they enjoy, and skip, without guilt or drama, all of the rest. They are living in their shared purpose – to enjoy this life.
I LOVE RULE #2!
Now, if you’re thinking “Well, that’s just not realistic. We all have to do things we don’t enjoy from time to time.” I hear you. And I absolutely have done lots of things I don’t enjoy as have my good friends. Life if life and stuff happens. Now, I would say that I definitely haven’t done things I don’t want to do for long, that’s for sure!
I would offer that we have the luxurious opportunity to choose what we do and how we think about what we do.
So, even if you are working at a job that you don’t particularly love, but it supports you and your family, or helps you to pay down debt, or puts your children through college, you’ve made a choice. And, so how do you frame your thinking around that choice? Will you decide to dive in and find the “enjoy” in it? Is there an opportunity to find the “do what you want” in it? Can you bring it back to your purpose and how you want to live this Awesome Life?
I’d love to know your thoughts! Leave ’em in the comments below.
