Are You Playing In The Weeds? 3 Tips To Rock Your Life Goals!

052917-0018

“So, why are you playing in the weeds?” I asked a beautiful friend the other day, as we were talking through our life and business goals over coffee. She replied “No, really. One of my goals is to never do laundry again – -ever. I hate doing laundry. It’s a time suck.” She was serious.

I totally got that. I hate doing laundry (and I don’t do it!). It is a time suck. And time is precious.

That said, I posed my question because 1) I love her and wish her the stars and the moon and 2) I wanted to encourage her to release all low ball, “To Do” thinking and see things from a higher, “To Thrive” plane. Was laundry the issue? Was no laundry the end all? I think not? She’s a rockstar chef, business owner, wife, mother, and fabulous global citizen. Go bigger.

Why don’t we reach our goals? Because we set them too low.

When we “play in the weeds” our focus goes to ticking off little things from a list that we hope will temporarily relieve a bit of the discomfort or pain, soothe little fear, and mute that inner voice within all of us that’s begging you to live your wildest dreams. I totally get it. When I first started my wellness business, I was running around New York City like a mad woman from dawn to well past dusk picking of $30 here, $50 there to make ends meet. Weeds. Really, my plan was to teach as many classes as I could to pay my rent. That is, to pay my rent late. This was an actual goal. Teach lots of classes, all day long, for $50, to pay my rent. Weeds. And, not rockstar living that’s for sure. Things had to change. And that change came through getting clear on my vision.

Got Vision?

What’s your vision for your life? Where do you see yourself in a year? Five years? If you want to get out of the weeds and start living the abundant, bright life you deserve, you, my friend, need to envision the life you want. When you have that clear focus of where you want to be, who you want to be there with, and how you want to serve (because we’re all here to serve one another!), you start to think bigger and bolder.

Here are my 3 Tips on getting rockstar honest about your goals and staying out of the weeds:

  • Look deeper to go bigger. What’s really going on here? Is it laundry or is it time? And if it’s time, time to do what? Whatever your goal is, spend some time fleshing it out to get to the root. Once you get there, get aspirational. Think sky’s the limit and what you would do if you had no constraints.
  • Does it excite you? When I look at my vision board and read my goals, I get all giddy and a lot fierce about making them happen. As you write your goals and speak them, you should absolutely feel like you want to do the happy dance. This is your life we’re talking about here.
  • Get a coach. No seriously. Get a coach. You absolutely need that someone who will listen, question, give feedback, and guide you to the next level. Invest in your dreams.

You are a superhero powerfully divine rockstar of a being who deserves to soar. Remember this as you start to imagine and design your life.
