108 Sun Salutations to Welcome Spring!

TracyeYMCA2

Next Thursday, March 20th is the Spring Equinox.  Winter in New York has been, shall we say, “special”. That is to say that is has been super cold, snowy, and dark. Hail spring with all of your sunshine, fresh rains, color and life!

For the Spring Equinox, we yoginis and yogis hit the mats and offer up 108 Sun Salutations.  This is not a typo. 108 Sun Salutations. Why (oh why?), you ask? Well, there are many different explanations as to why 108.  Why not 8? Why not 10? Why not 2?  Apparently, 108 is a sacred number in Hinduism. Some say the number comes from this idea. Others say that this number connects the sun, the moon, and the Earth.  But, again, there are several different thoughts.  Read more here.

Me? I love the heat that rises in my body, the cleansing, and the awakening that takes place as I move with the breath. I love creating a physical manifestation of a mantra. I love letting go and starting anew.  There is, simply, nothing like it.
